I love food, but don't cook well…but I can whip up a dish or two with my pen and paintbrush.

I grew up in a household of love, but lacked monetary riches. I realized fairly young that I could have anything I wanted with a swap of pencil on paper. I often drew exquisite houses, detailed patterns on imaginary fabrics, and farms filled with fields of flowers.

Lack of material things gave me the gift of truly appreciating the simple things in life…flowers, tea cups, patterned textiles, and a good casserole. Antiques and flea market finds also squeaked into my world. These items were often inexpensive, held an intriguing story, and were frankly, just beautiful.

Today I’m still inspired by haphazard objects that inadvertently pass through my life…whether it be vintage, blooming or just crafty finds. My three kids inspire me the most….with their innocent point of view.

With my design background (in landscape architecture) I'm constantly trying to create new formulas to add freshness within my illustrations. I like to challenge myself by meshing unrelated objects to create new perspectives. Strawberries and the circus. Pancakes and a picnic. Blueberries and a pizza.

This blog began as a goal to draw one illustration a day for a whole year (originally all on playing cards). I amazingly achieved this goal in 2009, so have now expanded that idea into monthly “themed projects”. I love using this blog as a forum to complete my tasks, while asking for input along the way (usually via Facebook and through the blog comments section). Some days I feel like a stage performer asking for requests to create impromptu skits. I love the thrill of inviting ideas, then creating something with them the next day.

What does this all mean to you? I've been told that my illustrations make people happy (is that possible?). Quite honestly, why not gorge on food art daily, while never gaining a pound...then just smile about it?

On this site you can experience my fresh perspective of food through the following ways:

My daily blog

My shop

My design work

My public speaking services

My newsletter

Check out my new garden blog: Topiary & Tiramisu
